What style do you dance?

Hi,
I just thought it would be interesting to see which styles of Indian dancing the members of this tribe are into, how long you have been dancing and so on :)

I am currently taking bollywood dance classes with the most amazing teacher but would love to try out Kathak and Odissi as well. Luckily for me my current teacher has a strong background of classical Indian dance as well as producing "pure" Bollywood shows so she does include a lot of classical movements into the choreographies she teaches us. She is also very particular about teaching us to really "dance like Indians" as opposed to just performing Indian dance movements, so she has us working hard on facial expressions and fine tuning of movements and body language.. The kind of things that don't always come naturally to Swedes :)
I only started taking her classes about six months ago so I'm nowhere near being a good bollywood dancer, but taking these classes is one of the best decisions I've ever made.

I am a student of Bharat Natayam of just under a year. I love it but it is very challenging! I have the reverse happening though. My teacher was asked if the school would participate in a festival with Bollywood, so she taught us a Bollywood choreography to "Aaja Nachle". That as a blast. I also study some Bhangra and Rajasthani when I can. My original instructor was from Rajasthan and started me on some folk steps.

And yes, I try very hard to get the stylization down as well. We do mostly all Indian audience performances and I don't want to stick out! I want to remain true to the dance so I work really hard on that like you!

Oh, Aaja Nachle is probably the next song we will be dancing to :)
My teacher also blends some Bhangra and other folk dances into some of her choreographies and will be teaching us the basics of Dandiya Raas as well later during this term, I'm really looking forward to that.
Does your teacher/group have a homepage or youtube videos up?

Stylization was the word I was looking for. :) Yes, I feel that it's important to get it right for many reasons - not misrepresenting my teacher and the dance form being the biggest ones - but also for my own sake. Out of the 12 (I think) persons in my group only two are Indian, so the rest of us have to compensate a little extra to try and not look so western, haha.

Dandiya Raas!! I love my dandiyas! If you ever get an opportunity to attend a Garba for a celebration such as Navaratri do it. There's nothing like diving right in to the culture and dancing the night away!

And again I have the opposite happening...I am the only white woman in classes. So I stand out at the performances quite a bit. But I am always warmly welcomed and accepted. Being a dancer opens up the world for me literally as well as figuratively! :)

I do Bollywood Mujra. I study Kathak and Bollywood Mujra (which is based on Kathak). I take from Indians and I perform for Indians, although occasionally the belly dance community as well.

That sounds really interesting! Will do a youtube search to get a better idea of what it looks like.
The "problem" with living in Sweden is that we don't really have a large population of Indians here even though there of course are many immigrants living here, and Swedes are in general fairly interested in other cultures. So I doubt I'll ever get to perform for an all-Indian audience unless the show group I'm in starts travelling abroad. Not that it wouldn't be nice... :)

As I wrote to Samira we don't have any large community of Indians living here in Sweden so I would probably have to go abroad to find a Garba to attend but on the other hand I certainly wouldn't mind travelling to India if I had an opportunity. :)

Yes, dancing certainly is a great way to expand one's life. I believe - correctly I hope - that as long as I put my all of my heart into my dancing I will be able to continue to broaden my horizons both externally and internally..

i am student of Odissi and love it. its challenging and hard. but its beautiful. i can feel how my body is changing.

Dandiya Raas runs in my genes and blood. though I would not classify it as a classical dance, but as a folk dance.

How long have you been studying Odissi?

That's what I feel is the biggest issue for me when I'm dancing - the fact that I am in no way connected to Indian culture and that I might not even have "the right" to try and learn certain dance styles. It's almost the same thing with bellydance, but there are so many styles of fusion within the bellydance community that it's easy to overcome the issue of culture. In a sense the most natural thing for me would probably be to start learning the folk dances of Scandinavia and northern Europe but since "our" old dance forms aren't present in our everyday lives they sometimes seem to be almost as distant as Indian, or Middle Eastern dancing...

I study kathak as well, though I frequently attend concerts for the other classical forms.

        Pernila,

There is nothing like the right to learn something.

I would say that you should go with what truly speaks to you and calls you. Whatever that is.
Indian classical dance requires a lot of hard work and practice. If you are not in love with the dance form, it will be become a miserable experience for you.

I have been studying Odissi for 3 months only. I studied Kathak a bit when I was a kid and then gave it up. It just does not speak to me. But Odissi does.

Indian folk dances are much easier to learn such as Garba or Daandiya or Bhangra...The steps are simpler and there is not so much emphasis on getting to a perfection and there is much more freedom involved. Whereas Indian classical forms is a study for years and even then so, one has to come to a point to culmination of the studies which is called Arangetram for BharatNatyam and Rang Puja for Odissi.

So finally, whatever it is that you pick,. make sure that u really love it - everything about it - the movements, the music, the clothes, the rhythm. and then go for it. whether it be indian or not, with dedication, devotion and perseverance.

Yes, if you are not indian, it might take a bit more effort to learn about the culture and the tradition and history of the dance. What I find is that Indian Classical dance is immensely transforming. When you are start dancing with certain moods and on certain rhythms, the qualities automatically start getting imbibed into us. So just this journey of learning to dance itself can take into an immersion of what this culture is all about.

        Many wishes.

I have been dancing Bharata Natyam since 11 years and have been teaching and performing Bollywood Dance for about 8 years.

On the side I also do a bit of Bhangra and Dandiya Raas.

And because I seem to be collecting dances, I also do Oriental dance (bellydance) and Tango Argentino :-)

I am now learning kathak dance from a Japanese teacher who won a scholarship to study kathak Lucknow style, I think, with Birju Maharaj ji himself. She was at Kalashram. But that is all the information I have so far, I saw the certificates on the wall. If anyone knows more about these schools, please let me know. I am new to kathak, coming from bellydance and flamenco.
