Hello lovers of Indian dance....
After much contemplation, I finally managed to see which dance form I am most attracted to and it is Odissi. I just love this dance form. Now the next chagrin is which teacher?
I know of 3 main teachers in the bay area: Vishnu Tattva Das, Jyoti Raut and Niharika Mohanty
I am wondering if anyone knows of differences in dance and teaching styles and any experiences with these teachers?
I have seen Vishnu Tattva Das perform and he is just beautiful. I have see Jyoti rehearse for her performance and it appears to me that there is some difference in both their styles. I imagine its because of learning from different teachers.
Anyone can illuminate me more on this subject and different Odissi styles would be wonderful.
Namaste.

Re: Odissi dance teachers in the Bay Area
Thu, August 14, 2008 - 3:47 PMI have taken workshops from Vishnu and really enjoyed his style. He's very detailed, but has a pleasant and calm demeanor. He is very welcoming to beginners, though his workshops are certainly a challenge! -

Wed, August 20, 2008 - 2:01 PMyeah, i agree. I had taken a couple of classes with Vishnu about 4 years ago and loved his style. Intrinsically he appeals to me.
But I was sort of debating if Jyoti Raut might be better choice as a teacher? She seems more established in her teaching career......

Wed, October 22, 2008 - 7:32 PMJyoti's a great teacher, but it's also my understanding that she's a total drill sergeant.
Personally, I really like her style. I think it's particularly fluid, very athletic, and VERY detail-oriented.
