What style do you dance?

Hi,
I just thought it would be interesting to see which styles of Indian dancing the members of this tribe are into, how long you have been dancing and so on :)

I am currently taking bollywood dance classes with the most amazing teacher but would love to try out Kathak and Odissi as well. Luckily for me my current teacher has a strong background of classical Indian dance as well as producing "pure" Bollywood shows so she does include a lot of classical movements into the choreographies she teaches us. She is also very particular about teaching us to really "dance like Indians" as opposed to just performing Indian dance movements, so she has us working hard on facial expressions and fine tuning of movements and body language.. The kind of things that don't always come naturally to Swedes :)
I only started taking her classes about six months ago so I'm nowhere near being a good bollywood dancer, but taking these classes is one of the best decisions I've ever made.

NEW INDIA TRIBE

Since I was thrown out of the biggest group about India on tribe and my posts have been censored there, I’m starting a new India tribe where there is freedom of speech. All who are interested in India and who want to participate in civil discourse are welcome. I’ve posted the article that was censored at the other tribe as the first article in the new tribe.

This is group where people are free to talk about Indian politics, culture, travel, and wildlife.

"I dance..." Photo Project

"I dance because it makes me happy."
"I dance as a form of sacred prayer."
"I dance to feel younger."

Why do you dance?

The "I dance..." photo project celebrates dance, dancers, and explores the effect of the art of dance on those dancers.

I have scheduled the final two shoots for my "I dance..." project!

This project is open to all dance styles! Come in your favorite costume (or dance gear) with your favorite music in hand. Think about why you dance so that you can complete the phrase "I dance..."

You will be asked to sign a model release in order to participate. As a thank you, you will receive a soft copy and an 8x10 hard copy of your finished image which will combine your photo and your reason for dancing into a completed piece. This is a personal art project with an end goal of being the focus or a solo show. If you would like to see the previously completed images for this project, please visit: http://flickr.com/photos/gladygirl/sets/72157606715851220/

The session will be held at a rental photo studio in downtown San Jose on February 21 and March 7. I'll be taking names for 15 minute portrait slots with the first slot at 11am and the last slot at 5:15pm. There will be no appointments between 12:00 and 1:30. The first slot after lunch will be at 1:15pm.

SOME IMPORTANT NOTES:
1) The schedule will be tight, so being on site and ready to dance at your scheduled time will help keep us all on time.
2) The studio space is located on the second story of an old warehouse. There is only stair access. Please keep this in mind.

If you are interested in participating (and/or have questions), please send me an email with your top three desired time slots, and your contact information to gladys@thenakedartisan.com. I will then confirm your time and provide the address and directions to the studio.

Thank you in advance for your support and participation!

Regards,
Gladys White

Odissi dance teachers in the Bay Area

Hello lovers of Indian dance....

After much contemplation, I finally managed to see which dance form I am most attracted to and it is Odissi. I just love this dance form. Now the next chagrin is which teacher?
I know of 3 main teachers in the bay area: Vishnu Tattva Das, Jyoti Raut and Niharika Mohanty

I am wondering if anyone knows of differences in dance and teaching styles and any experiences with these teachers?
I have seen Vishnu Tattva Das perform and he is just beautiful. I have see Jyoti rehearse for her performance and it appears to me that there is some difference in both their styles. I imagine its because of learning from different teachers.

Anyone can illuminate me more on this subject and different Odissi styles would be wonderful.

Namaste.

need advice on offensive moves - to native Indian audience

Help! I and another belly dancer are going to be performing for an audience that will include native Indian viewers. We are trying to be conscious of that, and wanted to know if any experts out there could share some tips on what to avoid - gesture-wise, movements, costuming, etc. Some of our choreographies include arm overhead - so armpit *may* be presented...and pelvic tuck/release combos, etc. - that may be offensive to some audiences. What can we do to ensure its a family friendly show? Any advice would be appreciated!!

Here's our first class... We have Indian choreographies coming in July!!

BellyDance for Beauty and Health
Have Fun and Feel Sexy while you Exercise

Tuesday nights starting May 20 2008
with Sherry VanGoethem
of ADC Performance Troupe and Dance Academy.
Held at the Center for True Harmony Wellness and Medicine
2152 S. Vineyard #138 Mesa AZ 8521
480-539-6646-ph

Classes will be from 6:20 to 7:20 on Tuesdays. $15/class

Details:

All levels are welcome!
We will be drilling the basic belly dance moves.
For the mid-level to advanced student: Create purified muscle memory in the moves and FULL extension in each of the moves.
For the beginner student: Introduce yourself to the beautiful and sensual moves of belly dance. Begin to master these moves by developing muscle memory.

Benefits:
Develop abdominal muscle strength and definition. You will work all part of your ‘six pack’, the upper, middle and lower abs.
Decrease back pain by learning the moves that will strengthen your lower back and upper back.
Increase arm strength and definition by mastering the belly dance posture
(I call it the Queen pose!)
Get a ‘bum lift’ ;) You will be doing great gluteal exercises to strengthen and actual lift your bum to give you rounded effect from hind sight.
Minimize that shoulder pain by opening up your chest muscles and ‘dropping your traps’. Do your shoulders feel like they are raised to your ears? We will stop that!

In each class we will target different body parts and drill the moves to make each class fun, different, progressive, did I mention …FUN FUN FUN. Listen to great grooving music, move your body, increase your heart rate and learn dance you can take home to your man;)
dance style help

I posted this in the Bharatha Natyam tribe and already got some feedback, but I was hoping to get more suggestions.

I would very much like to learn some kind of Indian classical dance. My heart was set on bharatha Natyam, but due to severe arthritis which led to bi-lateral knee replacement 3 months ago, I have basically learned that I will not be able to engage in this specific dance. Just too many deep knee movements that I can no longer do, and adaptations/ modifications would seem to me to be disrespectful to this beautiful dance. I asked this question on the other tribe and basically, most everyone felt the same way.

One person on the other tribe then made a suggestion about exploring other dance Indian dance styles, ones with less knee bending, and she suggested kathak. I really don’t have any knowledge of other styles. In fact, I didn’t really know much about Bharatha Natyam either, but I saw some videos of this dance and was beyond mesmerized.

I know there are quite a few different styles, but I am hoping that others on this tribe have enough experience to offer suggestions about which style might fit with some of my physical limitations. Thanks for your help.

Odissi Dance DVD suggestions

Greetings!

I live in Seattle and I would really love to take Odissi classes with Ratna Roy, however my schedule doesn't allow me to take her classes at present. In the meantime I'd like to get started by learning from DVDs.

What Odissi DVDs would you recommend for a beginner? I have a little ballet & jazz dance experience, a fair amount of belly dance experience and have done tons of yoga.

I am considering the following DVDs but I am open to other suggestions:

Colleena and Guru Padma Cheran Dehuri present:
Odissi - Choka Stepping 1-10 Instructional DVD

Ratna Roy:
Orissi Exercises I
Bhumi Pranam, Padabhedas, Stretch Exercises, Chauka and Tribhangi Exercises

Orissi Exercises II
Charis (walks); Bhramaris (spins); Shirobhedas (head exercises); griba bhedas (neck exericses), drsti bhedas (Eye Exercises); Mudras & Viniyogas (Single and Double hand gestures and their uses)

My apologies if this question has been answered already. I searched, but did not find any thread that addressed this.

I currently study middle eastern, and north african dance, but have always been facinated with Indian dance, both Traditional, and Bollywood.
As a newbie, i would not be looking to do backbends, or other moves that would be too taxing on my skeletal structure lol!
I would just love an easy introduction to see if i liked it, and then would seek out proper classes

Dear friends,

In a few weeks, i am going to Rajasthan, where I will be meeting nomad kalbeliya families. Our Organization would need clothes for children, especially very small children. So please, if you have anything to give, we would be happy to take it to India. I will be in Paris until January 9th, so for those who live in Paris, somebody from the Organization would come to pick up the staff. And for the others, there is a possibility to send it. And for those who are already in India, I will be performing in New delhi (Januar 10th and 11th) and in Orissa (January 12th) before going to Rajasthan, so if you wish to help, please contact me as soon as possible so that we could meet in Delhi or elsewhere.

I wish you all Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

The Krisnah's Lotus Temple in Spanish Fork, UT, is now going to be offering Classical Indian Dance lessons--Kathak, Odissi, and hopefully soon kuchipudi! So for those of us who are transplants here and have lost our gurus, this is wonderful news.

Hi everyone,
I am really interested in learning as much as I can about bollywood style and other (kathak, classical, punjabi...) types of indian dance but because of where I live (small town in Ireland) and my situation (teaching and kids...) I can't take classes or travel much to attend workshops (only every now and then...) so I won't be able to learn it properly but I would love to at least incorporate some moves into belly dance as fusions but I would like to do it right and apropriate, has anyone got suggestions on good dvd's or online clips or other links or info on the subject? Is there anything I should be aware of? Like inapropriate use of moves to certain lyrics or types of music, etc...?

I have gotten an e-mail that advertises folk dance workshops in Chandigarh, North of New Delhi, in February.
The organizers are the Chandigarh Institute of Performing Arts.

Has anybody been to one of these weeklong workshops? How was it?

I am kind of interested, since I really want to learn more about folkore dances (they offer Bhangra, Dandiya, Ghoomer and Kal Belia).

MUSIC AND DANCE TOUR IN RAJASTHAN
In the heart of the nomad village
Kalbelya dance workshop with the rajasthani nomad dancers and musicians

JANUARY 14 TO 21, 2008

It has been a long time now since I've started organizing this trip each year and taking to the heart of Rajasthan to meet this extraordinary cast of nomad musicians, dancers and snake charmers living in the Thar desert. They are nomad, each year I have to find their new camp location and it is always a big joy to find it. As always, it is going to be a several days workshop with these dancers and musicians, as always it is going to be a wonderfull human aventure, a warm welcom in their village (a very bi privilege) and of course a small performance improvised only for us. If you want to go back to the origins of Rroma people and their dances, if you want to discover the authentic "world" of Gulabi Sapera, Suwa Devi Kalbelya, Musafir and others, this is a trip to do!

The number of the participants is limited, but there are still a few places left, so if you decide to join us, this is the moment!

To get more information about this trip or see the picture of the one I organized in january 2007, please visit the "Music and dance tours" of my website : www.simonajovic.com

Odissi Dancer Asako Takami is in need of help

I knew Asako when I lived in the Bay Area and was fortunate to see her perform on several occasions. Anyone who witnessed her was touched by her dance. It made me very sad to hear that her health has deteriorated dramatically due to cancer. Her friends and students have mounted an effort to help with medical bills and a possible trip home for her to Japan to see her family. I am copying the information below for anyone who would like to donate money or do a benefit show to help. Thanks, Erin

Hello Friends, Some of you may know Asako Takami, an Odissidancer from Japan who has been living in San Francisco for the past fifteen years. Some of you may have beenlucky enough to have the wonderful experience of seeing Asako dance. Asako has dedicated her life to Odissi, but for the past four years, Asako has been battling cancer. First it was cervical cancer, and now it isovarian cancer. She has not been able to dance orteach dance for almost a year and a half now, because the radiation treatments destroyed her right pelvic bone, and she has lost use of her right leg.She is extremely debilitated at this point and is mostly bedridden. Because she has not been able to work, she is in great financial need. We, her friends and students, are trying to raise money for her basic livingexpenses and medical care, but also possibly for aplane ticket so she can return to Japan to see herparents if her health will allow. We are asking thoseof you who know Asako, or saw how beautifully, exquisitely, she danced---or those of you who simplylove and support Classical Indian Dance,to make adonation to her. Please have checks made out to "Ralph Lemon" – Asako's boyfriend. The checks should be sent to their address:

1025 Steiner
Street, Apt. 10
San Francisco, CA 94115

Thank you so much for your kind attention.
Sangumay Ordona

Has anyone had the chance to see this yet?

http://www.vanajathefilm.com/index.html

Set in rural South India, a place where social barriers are built stronger than fort walls, VANAJA explores the chasm that divides classes as a young girl struggles to come of age.

Vanaja (Mamatha Bhukya) is the 14 year-old daughter of a poor, low caste fisherman, struggling with dwindling catches and mounting debt. When a sooth-sayer predicts that she will be a great dancer one day, she goes to work in the house of the local landlady, Rama Devi (Urmila Dammannagari), in hopes of learning Kuchipudi dance while earning a keep...

My dance teacher, Aparna Sindhoor, is back in town (yay!) and has some fabulous experts here from India to teach a limited number of classes.

They are teaching Kalari Payatu and Mohini Attam - neither of which have I seen much (if any) of here in Boston. There's a general interest workshop this Saturday - May 19, as described in the link. There will probably be more classes if there is enough interest with these workshops. And the price is pretty amazing - $15 for both workshops, $9 for one.

Seattle Bollywood Dance Classes!

Do you adore the bollywood dance sensation that has swept the globe? Have you always wanted to learn the intricate movements, dramatic facial expressions, and graceful stylings such as those of Aishwarya Rai and Madhuri Dixit? Come join our Bollywood class in the Seattle U-District!!!

Our instructor is the phenomenal Nalini, dance extraordinaire. She has studied and taught the Indian classical dance Kathak and Bollywood, her passion, since she was 13 years old. She is also a famous award-winning bellydancer, with a fine arts degree in dance choreography.

Her classes are challenging, inspiring, tons of fun, and focused on making your dancing all it can be. As her students, we are her biggest fans, her friends, and we welcome any to come and try it out! Don't be mislead - it's hard! When I first started, I wasn't sure I could do it. But it doesn't take long before you are jumping, gesturing, head-bobbling away to the sounds of Kajra Re, Choli Ke Peeche, and many other classics.

The class is listed as a performance class because many of the students wish to perform the dances we are learning as a group, however, performance is not a requirement to enter the class. The class is also currently running on Friday nights, however, we are looking into starting another class on a different day. If interested, please see Nalni's website for more information: www.nalinidance.com/ or email me at a_briggs2@yahoo.com. You can also view her page on Tribe! people.tribe.net/nalinidance

Hello everyone! Just came across this tribe through the Boom Boom Bollywood tribe and I was hoping I could get some info. I'm looking for kathak, honestly just any style of Indian dance that might be available in the Cambridge or Suffolk area in the UK. Please let me know if there are teachers, classes, performances and such within a reasonable distance. Thanks!

Namaskar- what's yours like?

I'm curious about the differences in the namaskar one does before and after dance. I know why we do it, but I'm not sure about why they're pretty different. I'm on my second Odissi teacher, and the one she has her students do is shorter and slightly different than the one my last teacher had me do (and she had a different one for her more advanced students) and is different from my Bharatnatyam teacher's. I assumed the Bharatnatyam and Odissi namaskars are different because they're different styles of dance, right?

Would someone explain to me the differences and such among the Indian dances? Do different teachers make up different ones? How many are there? Thanks!

Pt. Swapan Chaudhuri (tabla) and Pt. Ramesh Misra (sarangi)
Tickets: $25 (student/senior/CADA) $30
TICKETS NOW ON SALE

The highest level of mastery in the Kathak tradition, is it's solo practise, demanding intense physicality, musicality and sense of drama. Accompanying Joanna for this performance are two artists with international touring and teaching careers that span four decades. Pandits' Swapan Chaudhuri and Ramesh Mishra, both regarded as the best in their fields, will support Joanna in the creation of 'sangeet'. This spontaneous coming together of melody, rhythm and dance, leads the performers and audience to the ultimate interactive goal of performance, known as 'rasa'.

Headdress Suggestion?

I will be portraying a Deity in an upcoming performance and was wondering if anyone knew where I might find a Indian or Asian inspired headdress? Something that sits atop the head and has some height to it is optimal, as is often depicted in artwork portraying Deities.
I would even be interested in knowing where to find the floral headdress the women wear or know what types of flowers are traditionally worn.
I have tika and the dangles that hang down similar to earrings but I am more interested in something taller and more ornate.

Hi,

I ran across a site from Kerala, India that has DVDs for just about all of their dance forms!... In particular most of you might be interested in Bharatanattyam, Mohiniyattam, Kathak & Odissi. I've checked with their customer service team and they are indeed NTSC and will play in US DVD players. Currently having problems placing an order with their checkout... hope that will be fixed up soon...can't wait to see these!

http://www.invisplaza.com (click on the tab for DANCE)

Be sure you choose the one for DVD and not VCD.
Each one has a little preview of a video.

The price for 1 DVD is $ 20.

shipping charges for 1 DVD -
through DHL - $ 15
registered Air Mail - $ 8

shipping charges for 2 DVDs -
through DHL - $ 20
registered Air Mail - $ 12

The package shipped through DHL will reach you within 7 days. The package send as registered airmail will take 2- 3 weeks to reach you.

Happy Dancing!

Hi all,

I'm new to this group. I've been studying Bharatanatyam for 16 months now.

I'm performing this weekend in a Diwali celebration. At one point, I have to portray an elderly man in pain who looks to the goddess Durga for help. The body movements are fine, according to my guru, but I haven't been dancing long enough to learn any complicated facial expressions. How can I show his pain? I already can express the seeking of help fine, but the pain is a tough one for me. Please be as descriptive as possible.

Thanks in advance!

Are they exclusive to BN or do other forms of Indian dance have them? I never read about arangetrams occurring with- say Odissi, but I could just not have read about them. If they are only a part of BN, is there any reason why?

Hi All,
I recently saw some Indian dancers performing at a festival and I was wondering what the red dye on the fingers is made out of?

I am a belly dancer that is beginning to fuse Indian/Hindu dancing with Belly dance and would like to add the dye on my fingers as it looks beautiful when performing.

Any tips?

Stick dances

So... the Bride and Prejudice movie question has me wondering...

I know in the North there's the stick dance Dandidas Ras. And in the South there's a very similar dance called Kola Attam.

Are they the same?
OR what are the differences?
Is there any link between them?
And are there other stick dances out there?

I've noticed in India that there's always regional variations to just about everything... so I'm figuring there must be differences, but I'd really love to know how to tell them apart.

Hello,

I have been learning Odissi for 2 years and I plan to attend an Odissi workshop one summer.

I would like to know if any of you attended this kind of classes (minimum of one month) and would like to share experiences (physical stamina, human relationship, progress...).
I am interested in experiences from all over the world.

I also read on www.kadam.org.uk that they propose a one-week summer workshop (No mention of year 2006, though: anybody aware?). Did one of you personnally experienced it, and what is your feedback ?

Thank you,

I have looked and looked but can only find references to the Natya Sastra. Can anyone tell if there is an English Translation of the actualy Natya Sastra somewhere. If not, what would be the next best (English translated) text to read.

If you have any favorite books on Indian Classical dance, please recommend them. I study Odissi, but am interested in reading good books on any form.

Thanks,

I'll be travelling to India for the month of February to visit my husband's family. We'll be in Bombay for most of the visit and then in Udupi, Mangalore. Can anyone suggest some teachers that might be willing to do private lessons with me while I'm there? I would prefer to learn some more Odissi or folk dancing but would be happy to just find a teacher to work with at all.

Thanks,

What's this style like? I'm not in love with Odissi and want to return to doing Bharata Natyam, but no one teaches it in my area. I found a Mohini Attam teacher and am considering it. Would it be useful for Bharata Natyam (I took Odissi so that it would be easier for me to go back to Bharata Natyam)? Thanks!

Bollywood dance extras?

You know the filmi song and dance sequences that are typical in Bollywood movies. Sometimes I notice that there are Ferengis in these song&dance #s, such as the drunken discoteque scene with Priety Zinta in KHNH, or the song with the westerners on the beach in Aitraaz or the scenes in Canada from Bewaafa. I want to be an extra in a Bollywood film, specifically a dance extra. Does anyone here on this tribe know about how to go about doing this?

DIWALI MINI-RITUAL

A small ritual for the coming Tuesday..the 'new moon' day. Please check this out at your

respective places. On this new moon day, India has a festival of light called "Diwali". It

also has a lot of other cosmic significances too.
There is a small ritual to be done to attract money.
On a ceramic plate, place some diskettes of camphor. Wear red and face the west

direction. Burn in it cloves. Take care that the cloves should be with it's 'ball' on its

apex.the top. Let the cloves burn completely to black ash.If they have not fully burnt out,

add some more camphor diskettes.Take this black powder & put it in a small silver box &

place it wherever you place your money.

All the time while the clove is being burnt, keep on chanting "AUM HREENGM SHREENGM

NAMAH".

This is a tried & tested 'totka'.Please pass this on.

Unless I can be with Thee,
My birth and life are but an affliction.

0 my companion,
And my eyes have gone dim.
Days and nights pass
As I call upon Thee.
Says Mira: 0 Hari,
Without Thee my life flickers feebly on.

I am mad with love
And no one understands my plight.
Only the wounded
Understand the agonies of the wounded,
When a fire rages in the heart.
Only the jeweller knows the value of the jewel,
Not the one who lets it go.
In pain I wandered from door to door,
But could not find a doctor.
Says Mira: Harken, my Master,
Mira's pain will subside
When Shyam comes as the healer.

Without my beloved Master
I cannot live.
Body, mind and life
Have I given to the Beloved.
Fascinated by His beauty,
I gaze down the road
Night and day.
Says Mira: My Lord, accept your servant --
It is all she asks.

Warding off calamities..

A small recitation, done during Navratra (October 9 days from 4th to12th)..recited just 27

times, facing north in the nights..is highly effective Siddhi to ward off every calamity.

Must be repeated every year during Navratra. One must have a Ma Durga photo/idol in

front. Burn an oil lamp to HER right ; incense to HER left. Sitting on red asana &

offerring red flowers to her ..recite:-

"AUM Namo-a-stute Bhagwate, Paarshwa Chandraa-dharendra Padmaavati Sahitaaye ,may

abheeshta siddhim;
Dushtagraha bhasm bhakshyam swaaha,
Swaami prasaade kuroo kuroo swaaha;
Hillihilli Maatangani Swaaha,
Swaami prasaade kuroo kuroo swaaha".

Daily 27 times for 9 nights of Navratra. When in danger, just recite it 7 times & blow

thrice shoulder to shoulder. You will be safe.
___________________________________________________________________________
It is too vast and beyond the scope of this letter to write the ACTUAL spiritual aspect of

Navratri ( Nav=Nine: Raatri (as it is pronounced)=Nights). There are two such Navaratris in

a year. One around March and one around October/Nov....depending on the Hindu Lunar

Months. Again, there are two 'facets' of Navratri. One the Pauraanic (ancient folklore)

aspect and one metaphysical aspect. I guess you may FIND latter too on the internet. Just

type "Navratri" on Google.

Siddhi means 'attainment'....especially spiritual kind. And the person who has attained

Siddhi..is called Siddha Purush. Purush meaning Man. "The man who has attained". This

attainment can be got by many methods..but Mantras (incantations in a specific way for a

specific purpose) is the BASE.

Durga is a combination of Duh (not as in US DUHH..lol) + gaah. The combo makes it

Durga. Duh.. D pronounced in softer note as the French do. Duh means bad/evil..Gah

means to 'ward off'. So Durga means she who wards off the bad/evil etc. And there are

stories about her.

ANY QUERY PL.CONTACT ME FOR CLARIFICATION.
Blessings to all;
Chandan
(pic at site above)

Sunday, August 14, 2005

Remembering an immortal bard
Bala Chauhan

... the hand that penned ‘Saare jahan se achcha’.

‘Kuch baat hai ki hasti mitati nahi hamari; sadiyon raha hai dushman; daure-jahan hamara’ (There’s something in us that makes us indestructible; For centuries the time has been against us, though) the verse came alive with the dancers performing on the stage, 100 years after Dr Allama Iqbal wrote his famous song - ‘Saare jahan se accha; Hindustan hamara’.

The performance, a unique tribute to the man and muse was choreographed by noted danseuse Guru Maya Rao and performed at the Ravindra Kalaksetra, Bangalore on August 10 - the day Allama Iqbal, then Professor of Government College, Lahore recited the poem at the inaugural function of the Young Men’s Indian Association, in 1904.

The event, conceptualised by the Karnataka Urdu Academy was to salute the spirit of the man and his song, which has become symbolic of national pride. “The song is on every Indian’s lips; but this is the first time someone has attempted to do a visual presentation of the song,” said Karnataka Urdu Academy chairman Dr M Nooruddin.

“It was a challenge to present ‘Saare jahan se accha’ in its true spirit. It took me two weeks time to choreograph the performance,” said Maya Rao, founder of Natya Institute of Kathak and choreography.

The performance began with a Kathak gat (form) - a perfect rendition to the lines - ‘Hum bulbule hain iske; yeh gulsitan hamara’ (We are its song birds; it is our garden). Later it changed format to martial art to suit the verses, which spoke about threat of foreign invasions - ‘Parbat woh sabse ooncha; hamsaya aasman ka; woh santari hamara; woh pasban hamara.’ (The mountain most high; a neighbour to the sky; it is our sentry; it is our saviour).

The beauty of the song is its timelessness. The lyrics are as topical now as when penned, more than a 100 years ago. For instance, ‘Mazhab nahi sikhata aapas mein bair rakhna; Hindi hain hum watan hain; Hindustan hamara’ (Religion does not teach us to hate each other; We are all Indians; our homeland is Hindustan).

The 20 performers, who had undergone rigorous rehearsals at the Natya Institute for the last 15 days said they did not know that the song would charge them so emotionally. “Once we began rehearsing it, we started feeling it. It’s such an awakening for us,” said Madhu Natraj Heri, who along with Tushar Bhatt was the kathakar (storyteller) in the performance.

Deccan Herald spoke to Syed Ahmad ‘Isaar’ who has translated seven books of Iqbal from Persian to Urdu, about the man, thinker and philosopher. “He was a citizen of the world and a thinker much ahead of time. Iqbal believed in humanity and was a strong advocate of equality. He wanted peace above and justice above everything,” said the octogenarian scholar. “His works reflect his humanism and respect for all mankind. He at one place has said, Aadmiyat ehterame aadmi; bakhabar shu asmaqame aadmi, which means that human beings should respect each other and should be aware of the position of every human being.”

Iqbal was deeply inspired by the Quran and much of his work resonates his inspiration. An heir to a very rich literary, mystic, philosophical and religious tradition, he imbibed and assimilated all that was best in the past and present Islamic and Oriental thought and culture. Iqbal was born in Sialkot in 1877 and died in Lahore in 1938. He visited the erstwhile Mysore State in 1929. He came to Bangalore on January 9, 1929 and delivered a lecture at the then Government Intermediate College hall (now a part of Government Science College) on ‘The concept of God and the meaning of prayer.’ He also visited the Globe Opera House on Brigade Road and the Muslim Library. His magnum opus ‘Javed Nama’ was inspired by this visits.

Years after his death, the pangs of his pain can still be felt each time in his lyrics when man wages a war against man - ‘Iqbal koi mahram; apna nahi jahan mein; maloom kya kisi ko; darde niha hamara’. (Iqbal, no one in this world has ever known your secret; Nobody knows the pain I feel inside me).

I fell in love with Classical Indian Dance may years ago while watching a group of dancers from Scottsdale, AZ. I think, perform for us at the library. My eyes were glued to them and my mouth hung open for most of the performance (not a pretty sight, I'm sure).
Does anyone know of a classical Indian dance teacher in my San Diego area?

Burningman: Dancing—Weds. Night @ Hookahdome

Hello Burning People,

I am super excited to be DJing for you at the Hookahdome’s Fire Spin Jam, one of Burningman’s most thrilling ethnic dance events. The fun will begin on Wednesday night, sometime after 9:00 PM. Clan Destino kicks off the night with aerial, belly dance and fire performances, and then the Fire Spin Jam begins. We will dance until kerosene runs out.... Haha!

Because this is a Hookahdome outdoor dance night, I plan to spin a kick-ass set. However, to give you expressive dancers a variety of tempos to work with, the music will be punctuated with funky midtempo dance music that will make your hips get slinky and reckless.

I will be playing a melodic set of deep, bass-heavy breaks house and funk of Middle Eastern, Asian and African origin. I will also be mixing it up with Bellydance and Bhangra music you will love.

To all you African Dancers, Tribal Bellydancers and Indian Temple Dancers, you don't need to have fire tools. There will be lots of great music that will appeal to you.

Devadasis

i started a new tribe for devadasis.
here's more:

tribes.tribe.net/cdfe1507-...-45b9-abe7-c7e2b29ebddf

devadasi means a female servant of god.
trained in dance, literature, music and the playing of musical intruments, Devadasis were dedicated to temples for entertaining the Lord.
They were highly respected for having the unique privilege of being in close proximity to the Lord and known as celestial singers and attendants to the Lord.
Owing to their own exalted status and role in society, Devadasis became a community. Members from most castes and communities, including orphans could become apart of the Devadasi community. Dance as an art form was performed and celebrated. The Agamas, sacred texts that established rules for worship in temples, ask for female dancers to serve in temples, especially those dedicated to Shiva.
In the 9th to 12th century AD the Devadasi system was at its height. Devadasis were dedicated to the massive temples built during this time around which their lives revolved, cleaning the temples, dressing the deities singing devotional songs and perfomring sacred acts of worship. The art of dance was meant for entertaining the Gods and took place in front of the image of the Lord. The Devadasis were often large-hearted and charitable and saved people, even their own Kings, from humiliation, donating land and giving away gold ornaments as acts of worship. The generosity of the Devadasis was matched by that of their patrons - kings and lords who endowed temples handsomely. Although much of the history surrounding the Devadasis seems to be maligned and full of misconceptions, we choose to honor and celebrate these sacred practices in our lives as worshippers of the Lord through song, dance, literature and by keeping the sacred flame of the Lord's temples burning
